BLUETTE®
Laundry Bluing is a product that can be traced
back more than a hundred years. It functions
as a laundry whitener because a trace of blue
in the wash will enhance white and light-colored
articles, making them appear whiter and brighter.
It works because of an optical illusion called
irradiation.

at the two squares above!
Though they're identical in size, the white
square surrounded by black looks slightly
larger than the black square surrounded by
white.
This illusion, discovered by Helmoltz in the
19th century, is called irradiation. It's
essentially an optical illusion created by
our minds and the structure of our eyes.
When we view an area that has both light and
dark objects, the fluids in our eyes are not
perfectly clear and light scatters while passing
to the retina at the rear of the eye (this
is where the eye detects light). As a result,
bright light, or light areas, spill over onto
dark areas of the image that is on the retina.
Thus a light region will appear slightly larger
than a dark region of equal size, as in the
squares shown above.
This explains why dark clothing, especially
black, makes a person appear more slender
than if they were wearing light or white clothing
of the same design!

Bluing
WALCO-LINCK's BLUETTE® Laundry Bluing is
added to the detergent at the start of the
wash cycle-unlike other laundry products
that they be added only during the final
rinse cycle. Instead of standing around
to wait for the final rinse, BLUETTE® users are free to
attend to other chores. As with all laundry
products, read label directions carefully
and completely before using.

Bluing
BLUETTE® Laundry Bluing is
sold in the detergent or bleach aisle of
most supermarkets and many smaller grocery
retailers in the New York area. It is not
widely distributed outside of the Northeast.
